Project: Silverlight CodeCamp

  • Client: For the greater good
  • Date: Januari 2010
Abstract:

Because of the success of the Pricing Centre project, Stephan managed to organise very succesful weekend conference called "Silverlight CodeCamp".

It sold out fully with 150 people attending (some even flying in from Europe!) and offering 2 tracks of 10 presentations from industry thought leaders per track, Stephan gained national Silverlight Guru status.

More achievements

By delivering the Pricing Centre project and being the first to release a Silverlight 2.0 application globally, Stephan build considerable recognition from his peers across the industry. This allowed him to organise the Australian Silverlight CodeCamp.

A CodeCamp is a mini conference where practitioners can meet and learn from other practitioners without getting bothered by vendors. (Conveniently ignoring sponsors for the moment :-)).

Australia Bank was willing to allow the use of its internal academy facilities for the weekend and with a sponsor paying for the food, the plan was final. Presenters come out of Stephan's personal network and soon filled up the timeslots. PR wasn't even needed as the presenters line-up and the grapevine took care of that!

The weekend ran very smoothly, with raving reviews and feedback, everyone hoping to have a next one the year after.

"Hi Stephan,
I had to leave early today and couldn't stay back to say goodbye. Just thought I'd send a quick note of congratulations for a well organised event. Having organised a few events myself, I understand and appreciate the time and effort you've put into organising an event like this. So, thanks and well done :)".

Mahesh

"Hi, I just want to thank you for the effort you put in for the code camp.
It was first rate and will only get better over time. Well done!"

Simon Cuce

"Stephan, Apologies I didn't make it the second day yesterday (I'm not as young as I used to be and the drinking took its toll). Just like to say thanks for all the hard work you put into it, it was by far one of my favourite SL "unconferences" I've been to in quite some time!

P.S. Your boss had a great quote about Silverlight how it was the most passive interruption to NAB? What was his exact words as I'd like to pass that onto the Silverlight Team / Scott Guthrie direct."

Scott Barnes, Former SL Product manager and the keynote speaker

"Hi Stephan, Thanks for a fantastic weekend. It was very educational, it is great to see all the great work people are doing with Silverlight.
I would like to make a minor suggestion, it would be great if one can print out the session details from the website. I am one of those people that got very poor memory and I can never remember what is the next session.
Regards,"

Tony Sun

"Stephan, I hope you're taking a well earned break today!
Feedback that I've gathered to date was that the weekend was a great success - I hope you feel the same way.
Congratulations on organising the event, will look forward to seeing the results of the improvements you help to drive in our environment."

Martin Campbell

"Hi Stephan,
A quick hello from Greg Keogh. We've never really been introduced, but we've probably seen each other for years at the SIGs and at the Code Camp last weekend. I'm the older guy (a frightening 53) who you might recognise from this photo I picked at random.

I'm keen to tell you that your Sunday talk about the design of your NAB SL app made me feel much more confident about my own work. Next time we meet I'll tell you how I've been writing a moderately complicated SL3 app over the last year which displays marketing statistics feed by a sophisticated Borland C++ written backend. The Borland stuff is COM based, so we talk to each other purely by passing XML back and forth.

I was amazed to see that my design was nearly identical to yours. I have views (controls), controllers behind each control, something like your service bus, the service call layer and the equivalent of the data layer. So top-down we're nearly identical. The reason I feel more confident now is that after working mostly alone for a year I was getting worried about doing things "the right way" and using a sensible architecture. So I feel much better now that I see I'm sort of following your team's design. I think if you work alone for a long time there is a danger that you can fall into bad habits or get out of touch with new techniques and tools. Attending tech events helps avoid this, but it still worries me.

When we get a chance to chat sometime I'll tell you how I also invented the equivalent of your message bus so that controllers can all broadcast and listen to each other. In my case though the "messaging service" (as I call it) is just a single a part of a set of standard "services" I created. Jordan Knight showed us how he likes to have a "service locator", and I'm right with him on that. A couple of years ago I got sick of having duplicated code in ASP.NET and Forms apps for common tasks like logging, configuration, emailing, resources, etc, so I created a singleton ServiceLocator class with a set of standard reusable services that I can use in almost any large app. I'll bet my messaging service is very similar to yours.

Thanks for your hard work on organising last weekend. I'll catch up with you at some upcoming SIG or similar event for a geek chat.

Cheers,"

Greg
