Abstract:

Stephan was formally hired as Snr. Scrum Master, but informally asked to also take on more overarching issues. The delivery was improved and SAFe successfully adopted.

Situation

The two teams in the “Sustaining” business unit are responsible for supporting the majority of the software applications for BD lab automation instruments at customer locations across the globe.


Tasks

Stephan was tasked to uplift these teams in terms of their documentation and delivery efficiency as BD Kiestra had started implementing Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).

As a lead he was also responsible for a smooth transition into the overarching SAFe implementation.


Actions

After a short introduction period Stephan took the initiative to implement improvements including but not limited to: Resource Allocation planning, improve Scrumban practices, a clear and agreed definition of Done, a technical debt backlog so that it can be prioritised against product development and more.

Stephan mentored the product owner to successfully reset stakeholder expectations for a vastly underestimated refactoring project.

Stephan aligned the work for the Sustain teams so that previously agreed timelines aligned with new work prioritised through SAFe.


Results

The 2 teams are increasingly more efficient, happier and are able to resolve customer issues faster.

The SAFe transition happened seamlessly for his teams.


Reflections

BD Kiestra is an exciting place to work, combining software and hardware into a product that is helping thousands of people every day.

It was great to be part of a successful SAFe adoption.
