Abstract:

This “Career Experiment” helped Stephan decide whether to continue his career into senior management or to remain full-time hands-on in technology.

Having successfully completed two high-profile technical projects, Stephan learned however that his passion had in fact shifted into management.

Situation

Having experienced the bad culture and politics at UHG, Stephan decided to go back to his roots and try software development again.

Tasks

He was a Senior team member in the Account Right team, which was responsible for building and maintaining MYOB's enterprise accounting software suite.

Actions

He enjoyed coding full time again very much, however... Due to his experience and connections within the Melbourne IT industry, he got pulled into management team meetings more and more.

This was clear evidence that he had outgrown full-time developer roles.

At the same time the Business Analyst on the project resigned and left the company quite rapidly. Needing to know what to build, Stephan took on the role of Business Analyst.

This was fortunate, as he realised within hours that much work was not captured in the plan and the project had to be re-estimated.

Also, he created a BIG (= 5 sheets of A0 paper taped together) overview of the work across the 3 teams involved and also highlighted work not captured yet in other teams.

Results

Stephan realised that he had outgrown full time development.

The projects were delivered only slightly later than the original deadlines (But well within the new) and Stephan received special mentions at many functions for his cross-team collaboration, serving as an example to follow.

Reflections

Even though this was a short employment at MYOB, they parted on great terms having gained great career insights.
